What truly defines the picture's essence?

As I compose a shot I think about the elements in front of the glass and how they can be arranged to convey the story I’ve created about their meaning. Then, when editing, I try to apply a look that best captures the feeling I had at the scene so that hopefully the viewer on the other side of the screen sees a little slice of the world in the way I did for that brief moment. Ultimately, I try to get across a love of life and beauty that helps me persist through life’s challenges rather than tap into any existential angst that can easily overwhelm the senses.
